Padova, 27 - 30 January 2026
Dear PhD Students, dear post-doc, dear young researchers,
After the very successful edition of 2025, we are pleased to announce the second edition PhD Winter School “Holistic Learning of Sustainable Chemistry”, organised by the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Padova, in collaboration with Monash University (Australia) and the University of Bath (UK), and under the patronage of the Italian Chemical Society.
The Winter School will take place at the University of Padua, from January 27 to 30, 2026, and will focus on the theme: Enabling Green and Sustainable Chemistry through a Holistic and System Thinking Approach.
In a global context increasingly focused on sustainability and circular economy principles, the chemical industry is called upon to rethink the design, production, and management of materials. From pharmaceuticals to polymers, cosmetics to agrochemicals, chemical production is a fundamental pillar of modern society, and addressing today's environmental, energy, and resource-related challenges requires the adoption of innovative and integrated approaches.
Chemistry will play a key role in addressing the challenges facing today’s societies in relation to chemical manufacturing and consumption, resource usage, energy requirements and implications for a benign and sustainable future for our planet. However, an interdisciplinary and holistic approach is needed to ensure technical innovations and solutions are sustainable as well as viable. The Winter School offers a broad and interdisciplinary approach to green and sustainable chemistry, combining technical insights with key topics such as life cycle analysis, circular design, and, above all, system thinking and the regulatory, social, and economic implications of chemical production.
The program includes introductory and general lectures, case studies of industrial relevance, cross-cutting contributions from academic and industry experts (within an Industrial Forum).
Participants will also engage in group work, guided by faculty members and representatives from international companies, where they will analyse and discuss technological, economic, and social aspects of a selection of scenarios related to different aspects and products of chemical manufacturing and consumption. Working in groups participants will aim to identify concrete and sustainable solutions that reduce or eliminate adverse environmental impacts and concurrently provide social and economic benefits.
Social events (Green aperitivo on 27.1.2026 and HR-networking on 28.1.2026, visit to Museum of Nature and Humandkind on 29.1) will integrate the scientific program.
The Winter School is open to PhD students and early-career researchers from universities, research institutions, and industry, who are interested in expanding their expertise in green chemistry and its industrial applications.
Registration fees (including coffee breaks, lunches, two social events, teaching materials, visit to the Museum): 200 € (early bird by 30.11.2025)
Registration and further details about the program can be found at: https://sites.google.com/view/holos-ws
We look forward to your participation!
