Transformation of Proteins to interconnected G-CF for water purification.A fruitful collaboration between ICCOM-CNR (Susanna Monti) and NANO-CNR (Valentina Tozzini) has been instrumental in a study on the production of ultra-light hierarchically structured nanoporous aerogels.

The simulation studies and analyses of the two CNR researchers have unraveled the steps of the transformation processes and shown how these aerogels can efficiently trap ions, mainly because of defects stemming from their bio-origin. Their intrinsic sustainable and bio-compatible character makes them especially interesting for water desalinization and purification applications.
